Differences Between Installer VISE 4.0 and Installer VISE Lite 3.5
Installer VISE and Installer VISE Lite both produce professional, easy to use installers with a minimum of work. There are two major differences:
(1) Installer VISE is licensed per product on a yearly basis, Installer VISE Lite is licensed on a per user basis for a one-time fee (the same as if you were buying something like a compiler or word processor).
(2) Installer VISE has many more features that allow for greater ease of use and customization of your installer. Below are some of the major differences between Installer VISE and Installer VISE Lite. Which one is right for you? Try them both and decide for yourself.
Below is a list of features of Installer VISE that are not in Installer VISE Lite:
1. Uncompressed Files on Installation Diskette
Files can installed from an uncompressed form on a particular diskette. In the Lite version, everything is compressed inside the install segments.
2. Billboards available
3. Up to 96 packages (Lite only has 32)
4. Translator Applications
Translator Applications provide a way to easily translate the data you’ve entered in your archive to another language.
5. Dynamic Localization Features
Allows you to create one installer that dynamically installs the correct language of your product. Also installer dialogs and strings are displayed in the language of the System the user is running.
6. Archive Reports
7. Advanced Settings
8. Support for multi-file updates
9. Built in action items for the installer
10. List Packages
11. Hierarchical Packages
12. Sub-Archive Packages
13. Enhanced support for CD-ROM installs
A complete list of new and modified features in Installer VISE 4.0 can be found in the “What’s New!” file in the Installer VISE folder.
Installer VISE has many settings to tweak your installer to give it the look and feel you desire. Installer VISE Lite does not have these settings. Listed below are the advanced settings present in Installer VISE:
• View by Generic Icon in Archive Window
When selected, displays generic icons for files and folders in the Archive window, the Add window, and the Update Archive window. If not selected, icons appear as they would on the Desktop.
• Show Easy Install Package in Custom Install
When selected, Easy Install appears as a selectable item in the Custom Install window.
• Don’t Recompress option.
When selected, additional compression is not performed when creating an installer. This option can dramatically speed up building time, and will make the installer slightly larger.
• No Restart Warnings in the Installer
When selected, the restart warning dialog appearing prior to installation is removed (under scenarios causing a restart warning dialog box to occur). The restart suggestion/option dialogs are still provided after the installation is completed.
• Maximize Space on Diskette
Disk space is maximized when writing the installer segment/s to floppy. This results in approximately 14K of extra space available per disk. It also reduces the amount of free space left on disk.
• Show Installer Window in background during Install
The In Progress install dialog is drawn on top of the Easy Install/Customized window.
• Display Package Names in Progress Dialog
Option shows the package name instead of the file name during the installation process.
• Don’t Display Read Me during Installer Launch
The Read Me will accessible only via a Read Me… button in the Easy Install/Custom Install windows.
• Check Gestalts on Custom Install
Forces the installer to honor Gestalt settings (made from Get Info. section) for items installed via Custom Install. The Custom Install previously ignored file level Gestalt settings.
• Allow Installer Resources to Replaced
Allows you to have resources with the same id as the installer (used to replace the Installer VISE installer icon with your own custom icon).
• Easy Install Show Sizes
Shows the disk space available and disk space needed in the Easy Install window – see frequently asked questions in manual for more details.
• Replace Disk Pop-up Menu with Select Folder Button
Two buttons (Select Folder & Switch Disk) appear in the Easy Install/Custom Install windows . The installer normally reveals a location pop-up menu & a Switch Disk button (provided pop-up menu items are: Select Folder…, and on-line volume names).
• Ask User Once on Fat Binary Installs
If you have "Ask User" set for Fat Binary Installs, and you have multiple Fat Binary files to be installed, the user will only be asked one time as to how they want all the files to be installed.
• Force Creation of Moved Items Folder
This will create a Moved Items folder in the Active System folder. You can then move files to it from your external code resources. An INIT will be installed in the users Extensions folder to delete this folder and contents upon restart.
• Display Billboards by Package, not by Disk
Allows you to assign billboard pictures that are displayed during installation to each package to be installed instead of each disk of the install set.
• Display Billboards in Separate Window
When selected, billboards will be displayed in a separate window above the progress dialog. Please note that the size of the screen is not checked, so make sure that your billboard will fit on all screen sizes if selecting this option.
• Show Remove in Installer
This feature adds a remove option to the installer. If the user chooses to remove your software, the remove function will remove the files it knows about which are defined when you setup your archive.
• Put Log File on Root of Volume
The install log file will be put on the root of the install volume instead of the first folder where a file gets installed.
• Update Archive Files With Any Difference
Updates files that are different from the original archive files in any way when you update an archive.
• Don't Set Installers' Shared Bit
The shared bit is not set, so only one person can run the installer at a time.
• Install Empty Folders
If all items in a folder are installed elsewhere on the target system, the empty folder will be created anyway.
• Uncompressed Files Are Optional
If an uncompressed file is deleted from a diskette, the installer will still function correctly; the missing files will be skipped.
• Don't Shut Finder Down From Installer
The Finder will not be shut down when other applications are shut down, so that Apple Events can be sent to the Finder.
• Only Store Catalog of Files
This is a CD-ROM feature only. Stores a catalog of files instead of the actual compressed data in the archive.
• License Agreement Mode
Allows you to display a license agreement instead of a Read Me file during installation.
• Show Invisible Volumes in Installer
Invisible volumes are displayed in the Disk pop-up menu in the installer so the user can select them as a target for the installation.
• Update Only Files in the Archive
Files already in the Archive will be evaluated during the update process. Files that are new on the hard drive will not be brought into the archive.
• External Code is Optional
External Code is contained in the resource fork of the installer. If the external code has been deleted from the installer, the installer will function as if no external code was assigned to files.
